Without question, we are living in turbulent and uncertain economic times. Unexpected financial hardships, job losses, stock market crashes and the “Credit Crunch” have created a financial climate of anxiety and fear.

Problems with money and debt are on the increase with over 6 million (one in four) families in the UK struggling to meet their financial commitments. Government and voluntary agencies are struggling to cope with the demand for their services.

Personal debt has spiralled out of control and a lack of effective financial education is giving rise to a generation of people who are struggling to understand how best to manage their finances.

With so many voices proclaiming their opinions, how do we know what to do? Where do we find peace?

How has Moriah Baptist Church responded? 

A few years ago we set up a financial counselling service in Moriah offering people in our community independent and trusted financial guidance and support. We offer a sympathetic ear and the opportunity to discuss their financial situation and the difficulties this often brings for them and their families.

Each of our clients came to us with a unique situation and over time as we helped them to deal with their problems we gained a lot of knowledge and experience. This sparked an idea to share this accumulated knowledge with others - other churches could adopt this simple outreach opportunity and most importantly, help people in their local communities as well.

We therefore set about creating a website (www.trustedfinance.org) with a view to it being a useful resource tool for any financial/debt counsellor helping their client through difficult times. We use the website to guide our financial counselling ministry - there must be many other churches out there with members of their congregations able to provide a similar ministry.

Financial counselling is a great opportunity for churches to reach out and meet the real needs of real people in their communities.

The website is an accumulation of our knowledge to help people in such situations. It's a one-stop-shop that brings together a lot of pragmatic and practical resources that can help signpost people through what is often a complex subject.

Our approach has already made a real difference to people's lives. Go on, why not give it a go!
